How to Make a Gravity Bong

This is going to require some innovative thinking. It will involve water and some household plastic items.

First, you need to start by gathering up all of your materials. To make a gravity bong, you’ll need:

  • A 16-20 oz plastic bottle
  • A bucket or 2-Liter bottle alternatively
  • Sharp knife or scissors
  • Aluminum foil
  • Poking device
  • Dry herb
  • Water

Step 1: Cutting the Plastic Containers

First, you’ll want to start by cutting both of your plastic bottles. Take the smaller one and, using your knife, cut off the bottom of the bottle, leaving about ¾ of it remaining. You are going to use the top part.

If you’re using a second bottle in place of a bucket, cut the top off of that one and keep the bottom part. Fill it about halfway with water. For those of you with a bucket, fill the bucket a little over halfway too.

Already thinking it might be too much of a project? We got you: Just buy a bong!

Take the cap of the smaller bottle, you are going to use the mouth of the bottle to fit the homemade bowl.

Speaking of a homemade pack bowl, using aluminum foil is the easiest way to do it. If you have a removable glass bowl from a regular bong, you can see if the stem fits in the mouth of the plastic bottle instead.

Let’s assume you are crafting the entire bong yourself though. Take your aluminum and mold a makeshift bowl out of it. Cut off any excess foil and make sure it rests snugly on the mouth of the plastic bottle.

Then, using your chosen poking device, a pin of some sort is ideal, carefully poke some tiny holes at the bottom. 3 or 4 holes should do the trick. Pack your bowl and carefully set it aside

Step 3: Placing Your Masterfully Crafted Plastic Bottle in Water

Next, you’ll need to take your smaller bottle (the one you used to make sure your tinfoil bowl fit nicely on) and almost completely submerge it in the water of the cut bottle or bucket. Only the mouth of the bottle should be sticking up out of the water.

Make sure to submerge the bottle before placing the packed bowl on the mouth of the bottle. Otherwise, the air that is pushed out of the bottle as you push the bottle down through the water will shoot the foil bowl off the top of the bottle. We always talk about dry herbs because wet herbs don’t light well.

Now that you can only see the neck of the bottle with the mouth sticking out of the water, It’s time to place the bowl. Make sure it fits nice on the mouth of the bottle, but not too securely so that you can easily remove it when it comes time.

Step 4: Time to Create Some Smoke

Light your herb and slowly pull your bottle up without pulling it entirely from the water. You’ll see the bowl turn bright orange just like you were smoking a bowl. The bottle will fill with smoke in the coolest way.

Make sure you do not pull the bottle all the way out of the water. Keep half an inch or so of the plastic submerged. Any portion of the bottle above the water should be absolutely full of smoke though.

Step 5: Taking the Hit!

Now, remove the bowl and carefully set it aside. Put your lips to the mouth of the bottle and push the bottle back down into the water while you inhale. All that smoke should get pushed into your lungs by the water.

This may take a couple times to get used to, but once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you’ll be feeling better than ever. Otherwise, that is one big hit!

If the gravity bong struggles pulling the smoke, that probably means there is an airflow problem. Examine the bowl, make sure there are enough holes in the foil and that it is not overpacked. If you are using a removable glass bowl, make sure it is not clogged.

Pro Smoker Tip

Gravity bongs are great at parties. It’s sort of like bobbing for apples…sort of. You can use a big bucket for the water and a gallon jug for the smoke. Once you get the idea, you can get really creative with homemade gravities. Just make sure nobody drowns in the bucket.

Step 6: Take it Slow, Gravity Bongs Pack a Punch

Sit back, relax, and enjoy. Often, gravity bongs can make even the most experienced smokers feel like newbies, so make sure to take it slow. If filling the bottle all the way up with smoke is too much, you can always stop it about a halfway full and take smaller hits.

Going Back to the Basics

The gravity bong, though rudimentary, is an incredibly versatile homemade piece that’s perfect for every smoker out there. Though, we don’t suggest relying on this method as your way of everyday consumption, simply because it isn’t incredibly accessible.

Once in a blue moon, or after the unfortunate case of a broken piece of glass, enjoying your gravity bong is a great way to enjoy your stash with a smile.
