How To Safely Refill a Blink Torch

Refilling a blink torch lighter might be one of the biggest struggles of owning one. In order to ensure the safety of your blink torch and yourself, you’ll need to learn how to refill it in the safest way possible. When doing something on your own without any research, there’s a high chance that you’re doing it wrong. A little reading might save your life — allow us to help you out!

What Is a Blink Torch?

A blink torch is a tool that produces flame using butane. It’s commonly used for lighting a cigar, jewelry, cooking, and even for mixing cocktails. There are a lot of areas in your house where a blink torch can be a big help, even in the kitchen wherein you could use caramelized sugar for your dessert!

Because the flame in a blink torch is adjustable, it’s easier and more convenient to use than any other lighter. Another advantage of having a blink torch is its size. Since it’s compact and portable, you could easily carry it around inside your bag and use it for other emergencies.

Safety First

Whether you’ve got a blink edge torch, a blink blaze torch, or even a rig and torch set — it’s important to learn how to refill blink torches. When using something that involves flammable gas and other hazardous materials, safety always comes first. A tiny flame could cost you your life if you’re not careful enough.

You need to learn the precautionary measures for using a blink torch. Maintenance, troubleshooting, and refilling should be your top priorities when you own one. It’s also very important to do your research before attempting to refill to avoid any unfortunate events that we wouldn’t want to happen to anyone.

Before refilling your blink torch, you need to make sure there are no flammable materials near you that could cause a burst of flame. If possible, clear your working area so that you can focus on refilling.

  • Make sure you’re in a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep away from other people, especially children, because they might not know what damage the butane could cause.
  • Never point the fuel valve directly to your face, point it away from you.
  • Wear protective gloves and goggles to avoid direct contact with the gas.

Preparing Your Torch for Refilling

First, put everything aside and focus on refilling your blink torch. Always make sure that it’s turned off. You can hear the gas if it’s turned on, so always double-check it.

Prepare both your blink torch and your butane tank. You can use any universal gas lighter refill for your blink torch. Next, take off the torch from its base. You can now see the little hole from the bottom, and that is where you will fill up the gas. You need to hold it upside down because you don't want to have air in your butane tank.

How To Purge the Blink Torch

Most people skip this step because they don’t know the importance of purging the torch before refilling it.

There might be some gas or a lot of air pressure inside of your torch. If it’s not completely purged, the flames may not come out as powerful as you expect them to since they won’t allow enough butane into the flame, and oxygen is not as flammable as butane. Air pressure could also build up every time you refill your torch. Without releasing it, the higher the air pressure, the less butane would flow into the gas chamber.

Purging is so much easier than it sounds. At the bottom of your torch, you can see the hole that is called the fuel valve. You could do the purging using the back of a wooden match or a small screwdriver, and you will hear a hissing sound while you do this. You will know when to stop when the hissing sound stops. Re-insert the tool you’re using to make sure there is no more air pressure inside. If the hissing continues, wait for a few seconds until it stops completely. As you do this, please always remember the precautions we mentioned earlier, never point the fuel valve directly to your face, point it somewhere else. Once the hissing stops for the second time, you are now ready to refill your torch.

Refilling a Blink Torch With Butane

When refilling a blink torch with butane, the first thing you need to do is to turn your butane canister upside down and let it sit for a few seconds, this will help the propellant to go in the top of the canister and the gas to sit at the bottom. After doing this first step, you can now proceed to the following:

  1. Get your torch and insert the nozzle of the butane canister to the fuel valve at the bottom.
  2. Always fill it up in an upside down position to avoid getting air inside.
  3. Press firmly for around 5 seconds and then remove it. Repeat if needed.
  4. Close the torch by returning it to its base. Make sure to close the butane canister and keep it out of the reach of children..
  5. Wait for a couple of minutes for it to reach room temperature before trying to ignite it

Become a Refilling Expert

That’s it! You have now successfully refilled your torch on your own. It’s not as hard as it looks, is it? Once you’ve mastered these steps, it will be much easier for you the next time you refill your torch. Just always remember the important precautions when working with flammable substances such as butane. Keep in mind, safety comes first.
