Refill a Blink Torch.

by Brian W

Whether it’s for heating a dab, vaping, or simply lighting up your hemp, a blink torch is an essential tool you always have handy in your bag wherever you go. It's the perfect way to get strong and stable heat, especially for properly heating your dab rig. It's, therefore, the ideal accessory for a dab kit bundle.

It can be annoying when the torch runs out just before or during a sesh. This is likely to happen often, depending on how many times you dab or vape in a day. As a result, you may need to refill your torch at some point. It’s therefore important to know how to do it safely and swiftly, and that’s where this particular post comes in handy.

How to safely refill a Blink Torch

Refilling is your blink torch is simple, although you have to be careful and take the appropriate precaution for your safety. This is because blink torches use butane, which is a highly flammable gas. You can get a butane refill online or at a hardware or drug store. But before we jump into refilling your torch, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Ensure you are in an open, well-ventilated room. At some point during the refilling process, some butane may slip out. The room you're in must have great air circulation to avoid ignition. Opening the windows or switch on a fan, where possible, will help with the ventilation.
  • Use a clean and dry surface to work. You don't want to get dirt or moisture into your torch and stop it from lighting. Ensure where your working is clean and dry. Lay out some newspapers, in case of any spilling - you don't want to dirty the surface.
  • Let the torch cool down first. If the torch ran out in the middle of a sesh, give it about 30 minutes to cool. Remember, butane is highly flammable. Avoid any accidents by introducing the gas into a hot chamber.
  • Adjust the torch’s flame height. You can do it using the switch available on some torches. On others, there is an adjustment knob you can adjust using a screwdriver. Simply twist it in the clockwise direction.

Once you've taken the necessary precautions, you are ready to refill your torch. Follow these simple steps and you'll be done in no time:

Step 1: Drain out the air and old butane from the torch.

The chances are that even though the butane is over, there may be some small traces left in the torch. The air and old gas may prevent you from refilling the torch and even end up breaking it. Before refilling, use a screwdriver to push the valve inside and let out any existing air. Keep holding the valve down until the hissing sound stops. When the hissing stops, you know all the gas has been expelled.

Step 2: Prep the refill can.

Do this by simply shaking the can before using it. The heavier butane tends to settle at the bottom of the can. By shaking, the propelling balls can help to prime it. 5-6 shakes should do the trick!

Step 3: Hold the torch and the butane can upside down.

Doing this prevents any air from being injected into the torch. That way, you avoid the gas from being diluted and also causing any accidents.

Step 4: Inject the butane into the torch.

Place the stem of the can on the refill valve of the torch and press the can. Hold it there for 5 seconds or so as the gas flows into the torch. You can check the fuel window if the torch has one, that way, you'll know whether the torch is full. Alternatively, you can press the valve. If the butane hisses out, then the torch is full. If not, then continue filling until.

Step 5: Give the butane time to come to room temperature.

Normally the gas in the refill can is compressed and colder. Therefore, let it sit in the torch for about five minutes or so to come to room temperature before using it. During this time, the excess butane that may have spilled on the torch will also evaporate to avoid any accidents.

Step 6: Re-adjust the flame and try lighting the torch.

To readjust the flame high simply use the switch or the screwdriver to twist the adjustment knob clockwise. Once the flame has been turned up, try to light the torch. If everything was done correctly then the torch should work normally.
